Touring the Khaketi Wine Region ofGeorgia
Nestled in the heart of Georgia’s wine country, our base in Telavi provided the perfect gateway to the renowned Khaketi Wineries. The journey through rolling vineyards, with the majestic Caucasus Mountains as a backdrop, set the tone for an unforgettable adventure.
Our first stop was at a family-owned winery, where we were greeted with warm smiles and the rich aroma of fermenting grapes. The vintner, a jovial man named Giorgi, guided us through the age-old traditions of Georgian winemaking. Georgia is considered the birthplace of wine, with a history dating back 8,000 years. We marveled at the qvevri—large clay vessels buried underground used for fermentation—a method that has been passed down through generations.
Tasting the wines was a revelation. Each sip told a story of the region’s history and the dedication of its people. The Saperavi, with its deep, robust flavor, was a standout, embodying the bold spirit of Khaketi. After our tastings, we enjoyed a spread of local delicacies—fresh bread, tangy cheeses, and succulent meats—amidst the serene vineyard setting.
Next, we visited another esteemed winery known for its innovative approaches. Here, we explored modern techniques alongside traditional methods, gaining a comprehensive understanding of Georgian wine culture. Lunch at this winery was a highlight, featuring a feast of local dishes that perfectly complemented the wines we sampled.
As the sun dipped behind the mountains, painting the sky in hues of orange and pink, we felt a profound connection to the land and its heritage. Our visit to the Khaketi Wineries was more than a tasting tour; it was an immersion into the soul of Georgia, leaving us with cherished memories and a newfound appreciation for this ancient winemaking tradition.
