Yuantong Temple
One of Kunming’s oldest and most important Buddhist temples, Yuantong Temple is a beautiful religious complex with a history stretching back more than a thousand years. Unlike many Chinese temples built on hillsides, Yuantong is arranged around a sunken courtyard, creating a distinctive setting of traditional architecture, peaceful gardens and ornamental pools.

- The beautiful central pond and surrounding walkways
- Religious statues, incense burners and decorative details
- Peaceful courtyards and landscaped gardens
Our Tip: Yuantong Temple is conveniently located within walking distance of Green Lake Park, making the two attractions easy to combine. Visit earlier in the day for a quieter experience and take time to explore the temple’s distinctive layout.
Kunming Old Street
The historic streets of central Kunming offer a fascinating contrast to the city’s modern shopping districts and high-rise buildings. Around Guanghua Street and Wenming Street, restored traditional architecture, narrow lanes, local shops and cafés preserve elements of old Kunming while providing an enjoyable area to explore on foot.
- Traditional Chinese architecture and historic shopfronts
- Guanghua Street and Wenming Street
- Local food stalls, Yunnan snacks and traditional restaurants
- Small shops, teahouses and contemporary cafés
Our Tip: Wander beyond the main pedestrian streets and explore the smaller lanes. The area is particularly enjoyable in the late afternoon when local businesses are busy and the streets begin to fill with people heading out for dinner.
Western Hills & Dragon Gate
Rising above the western shore of Dianchi Lake, the Western Hills offer some of the most spectacular views in the Kunming region. The area is famous for its forested slopes, historic temples and the remarkable Dragon Gate, a series of pathways, tunnels and stone carvings cut into the mountainside overlooking the lake.
- Panoramic views across Dianchi Lake and Kunming
- The famous Dragon Gate carved into the cliffs
- Historic temples, pavilions and stone pathways
- Beautiful forested mountain scenery and walking routes
Our Tip: Allow at least half a day to explore the Western Hills. A combination of cable cars, shuttle transport and walking can reduce the amount of climbing required. Choose a clear day for the best views across Dianchi Lake.
Dianchi Lake
One of Yunnan’s largest freshwater lakes, Dianchi Lake stretches along the southwestern edge of Kunming and provides a striking natural backdrop to the city. Surrounded by parks, walking paths, mountains and waterfront attractions, the lake is a popular destination for residents and visitors wanting to escape the busy central districts.
- Beautiful lakeside scenery and mountain views
- Haigeng Park and its waterfront walking paths
- Views of the Western Hills rising above the lake
- Winter gatherings of migratory black-headed gulls
Our Tip: Combine a visit to Dianchi Lake with the Western Hills for a full day of sightseeing. Haigeng Park is a popular place to enjoy the waterfront, particularly during winter when migratory gulls gather around the lake.
Guandu Ancient Town
Located in southeastern Kunming, Guandu Ancient Town is a historic neighbourhood known for its traditional architecture, temples, stone streets and lively food stalls. Once an important settlement and trading centre, the area now combines restored historic buildings with local markets, restaurants and cultural attractions.
- Traditional streets and historic Chinese architecture
- Ancient temples, pagodas and religious buildings
